Player of the Year Criteria

Every year the National Pinochle Association (NPA) will award the most consistent player of the six sanctioned tournaments with the coveted Player of the Year award. To win the Player of the Year award, a player has to accumulate the most Player of the Year (POY) points. Players must attend at least four sanctioned tournaments during the year to be eligible for the Player of the Year award. The tournament calendar for sanctioned tournaments runs from January 1st to October 31st of each year. Each sanctioned tournament awards a specific number of POY points to all prize winners based on each player’s finish in the tournament.   At the end of every sanctioned tournament, the POY points are totaled up. The player with the most points at the end of the tournament calendar for sanctioned tournaments receives the Player of the Year Award. If two members have the same total Player of the Year points at the end of the tournament calendar for sanctioned tournaments, the total scores for each sanctioned tournament participated in will be added together to determine which member has the highest score total. The member with the highest score total will be declared the Player of the Year.

Calculating Player of the Year Points

Each sanctioned tournament awards POY points to every player who places the tournament. The first place finisher receives the most points, and each successive finisher receives fewer and fewer points.

There are three different models the NPA uses to award points: one for the sanctioned events (excluding the semi-annual and annual tournaments), which is called the Standard Points Model, one for the Semi-Annual event, and one for the Annual event.   The following charts show the points awarded for each finisher in each type of tournament:

Player of the Year Recognition

The Research and Education Committee will be responsible for totaling up the POY points and the player with the most points will receive the Player of the Year Award. The committee will announce the results in the January edition of the Gazette.   The committee will coordinate any honors to the Player of the Year and will present the POY award during a ceremony at the Semi-Annual tournament held in April. The biographical information and photo of the Player of the Year will be displayed in the virtual Hall of Fame. The following year entry fees for the Semi Annual and Annual Tournaments will be waived for the designated Player of the Year.
